He took the Red Toll from a Lightborn road-warden he killed in his second year of brigand work, and he has worn the title since with the unhurried satisfaction of a man who decided early that a name should be earned through the work it describes. The Butchers ride where he points. The road pays what he asks. The few who have refused the toll are remembered in the Wastes by their absence, and the Wastes are not a kind country to those it has decided to forget.
